A group of pub drinkers have been hailed heroes after heaving a car into the air to free a four-month-old baby trapped underneath following a horror crash. The seven men leapt into action after a car ploughed into Jackie Stephens as she pushed a buggy containing her grandson Luke Stephens. After the black Ford Fiesta mounted the curb Jackie, 61, was left lying in the road with serious injuries and Luke was trapped under the chassis. Six men then hoisted the car into the air and one of them managed to free the baby – who miraculously escaped with minor cuts and bruises. Luke – the son of Jacqueline’s son Colin and wife Sam – suffered only cuts and bruises and was released from Derriford Hospital in Plymouth the next day. Injured baby’s sister in care (Stuff)- Baby ...

A baby girl is in a critical condition in Starship children's hospital and her toddler sister has been removed from their parents. Counties-Manukau Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Lynch said the baby's parents, who are in their twenties, took her to hospital on Friday. Police began an investigation that night after being alerted by medical staff. An Auckland District Health Board spokeswoman said last night that the baby remained in a critical but stable condition in Starship's intensive care unit. The baby's family was cooperating with police, he said. But the investigation was being hampered by the fact many of the people police needed to interview were on holiday. read more

Frozen carcass of baby mammoth to be studied (Toro...

TOKYOâ”The frozen carcass of a 37,000-year-old baby mammoth unearthed this summer in Siberia arrived in Japan today for tests that researchers hope will shed new light on the internal structure of the ancient beasts, an official said. The 4-foot gray-and-brown carcass arrived at Tokyo International Airport on Saturday afternoon, said Mitsuyoshi Uno, an official with the joint Russo-Japanese mammoth-study project that is overseeing the research. Discovered in May by a reindeer herder in northern Siberia’s remote Yamal-Nenets region, the frozen mammoth’s trunk and eyes are virtually intact and it even has some fur, but its tail and ear were apparently bitten off, Russian officials said. The mammoth, which was initially thought to be about 10,000-years-old, is bound for Tokyo’s Jikei Medical University, where it will undergo a computed tomography scan, Uno said. Researchers hope the scan will provide more information about the animal’s organs and internal structure. read more

The Candidates Face the Baby Boomers (BusinessWeek...

Each of the candidates has made some public statement on Social Security and Medicare reform, and several have proposed measures to improve long-term care options and financing. For people with other resources "who don't need Social Security for the long term," he also suggests the government offer "the option of a one-time buyout, or the opportunity to purchase an annuity" with their Social Security funds, which he says would relieve the long-term pressure on the system. Thompson and some other Republicans want to base future Social Security benefits on the inflation rate rather than on wages, and Thompson has acknowledged the effect of doing this would be to lower benefits for future retirees. Clinton's proposals include new laws that would prohibit companies from cutting employee pensions "when they sell off subsidiaries," and creating "American retirement accounts," similar to 401(k)s, with federal matching of up to $1,000 in contributions for families making up to $60,000 and a 50% match for families earning between $60,000 and $100,000. read more

US braces for baby boom retirement wave (AFP via Y...

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The first of the vast US baby boom generation goes into retirement in January, setting off a demographic tidal wave with wide-ranging economic, political and social implications. New Jersey grandmother is the first of an estimated 80 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964, a generation that led a social revolution in the 1960s and changed the fabric of most facets of society. The cost for government-funded social security and medical care for the boomers leaves a funding gap of between 40 and 76 trillion dollars for next 75 years, according to various estimates. He wrote that boomers have led or sustained most of "the great citizen movements that have advanced American values and freedoms — the environmental movement, the consumer movement, the women's movement, the civil rights movement, the diversity movement, the human rights movement, the openness in government movement. Americans aged 50 and over have a collective one trillion dollars in disposable income and control 67 percent of the US wealth, according to the over-50 social networking website Eons. A Pew Internet Life Project report showed two-thirds of those between 50 and 58 had Internet access as of 2004, similar to the number of 28- to 39-year-olds. read more

Baby-proof early, often (The Cincinnati Enquirer)-...

Housing dangerous utensils, toxic cleaning products and the oven, the kitchen is a good place to kick your baby-proofing projects into gear. Remember, eventually your baby will be able to reach drawers, so you may want to buy a couple of locks for when the time comes. Your baby will probably spend a lot of time in the living room, so make sure none of the furniture is wobbly or unstable. Kids frequently use furniture to pull themselves up or for support, so a shaky piece could be an accident in the making. Reinforce furniture with L brackets before the baby is crawling, or simply retire the piece until baby is steady on her feet. read more
