It’s different for each couple, but at the Infertility Friends support group, they let it all hang out â” the sense of failure, the expectations from parents and in-laws, watching younger friends and siblings conceive and having their sex life turned into a finely calibrated egg-and-sperm exercise â” all this comes tumbling out, safe in the confidentiality and shared misery of the group. The incidence of infertility in urban couples is on the rise and it’s no surprise that waiting rooms at infertility clinics are always full. Intra-uterine insemination is used when “nature needs help to start a pregnancy â” and the doctor can do this by giving the sperm a piggyback ride through a fine tube into the body”, as Dr Aniruddha Malpani explains. For most couples, adoption is usually the last option, turned to rather reluctantly when every other route for a biological child has been scoped out. Later on, they wonder what took them so long, but at the time, it is almost as if adoption is an admission of defeat in their torturous and expensive effort to woo the fertility Gods. After embarking on ICSI, Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection, a newer, more expensive treatment â” essentially creating an embryo outside the uterus and transfering the fertilised egg into the hopeful mother-to-be â” they were convinced that a child would soon be on its way. read more
